Yoshida Brothers: Cross-Continental Shamisen Fusion
by Scott Morrow

The striking, twangy, percussive sound of the Japanese shamisen has attracted listeners around the world, fascinated by what the slender, three-string instrument can produce.

Though many players adhere to the traditional Tsugaru-shamisen repertoire — a complex, improvisational style popularized in northern Japan — others have stretched the instrument’s boundaries. The Yoshida Brothers are one such set of risk-takers, meshing a fast, traditional style with rock, bluegrass, and cinematic styles.

Separated by just two years, Ryōichirō and Ken’ichi Yoshida have found success in their homeland, but they’ve become just as popular in the USA, where they began touring as a duo before even doing so in Japan. Amid the brothers’ current US tour — a trip that they take each year — they spoke to ALARM about what is “proper” for the shamisen, being seen as a novelty, and the differences in US and Japanese audiences.

(Answers translated by Tatsuya Hayashi)

What do you accomplish together with two shamisens that you could not with just one?

We have more variety of music by playing two. Basically, a shamisen is a unison instrument, so by using two shamisens, we can divide the parts into two. … Sometimes one plays lower and one plays higher. We can sometimes harmonize, but sometimes one plays a rhythm part and one plays the melody.

Have you encountered people who view your music as a gimmick or novelty? How would you respond to that?

Sometimes it is good for us, because the shamisen has a lot of potential for many genres of music, and that’s our mission – to show the potential of the instrument. There might be [criticism], but we don’t really care. (Laughs) The main thing is that we enjoy the music, and we want our audience to enjoy the music.

I interviewed an American shamisen player, Kevin Kmetz, who has a band called God of Shamisen. The band combines Tsugaru-jamisen with heavy metal and dozens of other styles, and he talked about traditional shamisen masters being upset at what he does. Have you encountered the same type of anger or opposition?

Heavy metal is going a little far. (Laughs) Some people think that our music is not proper for the shamisen. In our music, we always try to leave some elements that can be performed only by shamisen. That is something we always keep in mind, so that’s why we really don’t care what people say.

When you recorded Prism in LA, you worked with a number of great American musicians, including Matt Chamberlain and Jesca Hoop. Who else would you like to collaborate with on future albums?

We don’t have many ideas for vocalists. [Ken'ichi] mainly listens to jazz and respects artists like Pat Metheny and Chick Corea. Someday in the future, [we’d love to] collaborate with them.

We haven’t done any shows with a full band yet. So in the future, if we have a show with a full band in the States, we’d like to have [Matt Chamberlain] as the drummer.

Ken’ichi has said that eating local foods are the “only way to feel or enjoy cities.” What food have you enjoyed in Chicago, and what do you like about playing in America?

Pizza! More than food, we really enjoy the reaction from the audience; it’s very different and depends on the location. It’s very different from Japan too. We sense a freeness from the audience [in America] – clapping hands and shouting. Tsugaru-shamisen music is very improvisational, and it’s fun to [communicate in this way] from the artist to the audience.

[BOX SET] Yoshida Brothers Ibuki and Move Set (2 CDs)

We released Yoshida Brothers Ibuki and Move Set (2 CDs) @ Domo Store.

ibuki_move.jpg

BUY CD

Ibuki

Originally released in 1999, the Yoshida Brothers’ debut album Ibuki, is getting a well-deserved re-release from Domo, marking the first time it has been available in the U.S. market. When originally released, the disc sold over 100,000 copies—an incredible feat, since up to that point most tsugaru-shamisen recordings rarely sold more than a thousand copies in Japan. The album features mostly traditional tsugaru-shamisen songs, though hints of the Brothers’ signature style are starting to emerge. From the very beginning, it was clear that the group was bringing this ancient three-stringed instrument into modern times, interpreting its sound for a contemporary audience. This disc deservedly turned the Yoshida Brothers into rock stars in their native land, another rarity for tsugaru-shamisen instrumentalists. Take a listen to where the journey began.

Track List

01. Modern
02. Tsugaru Aiyabushi (Kenichi)
03. Ibuki
04. Tsugaru Oharabushi (Ryoichiro)
05. Tsugaru Yosarebushi (Kenichi)
06. Tsugaru Jonkarabushi Kakeai Kyokuhiki (Ibuki Version)

Move

The brothers began to spread their wings with their follow-up, Move (2000). This re-release of their groundbreaking second album represents the first time this album has been issued in the U.S. It features more original compositions than its predecessor and shows the brothers expanding their musical horizons, incorporating a variety of instruments beyond the tsugaru-shamisen and exploring numerous disparate musical influences. One song features the otsuzumi, a small taiko (Japenese drum), while three songs showcase a cajon—an Afro-Peruvian hand drum popular in Spanish flamenco music since the 1980s. The release of Move proved that Ibuki was no fluke and that the Yoshida Brothers, despite their youth, were capable of producing musical masterpieces that bridged the sounds of old and new Japan. Using the traditional tsugaru-shamisen in a contemporary manner, the Yoshida Brothers produced an original sound that distinguished them as true musical visionaries.

Track List

01. Ayumi
02. Tenpu
03. Tsugaru Yosarebushi (Ryoichiro)
04. Tsugaru Oharabushi (Kenichi)
05. Wakimizu (Ryoichiro)
06. Ibuki (Kenichi)
07. Koishi
08. Tsugaru Jonkarabushi Kakeai Kyokuhiki (Move Version)

Yoshida Brothers Interview by Askew

Yoshida Brothers will be performing at Otakon 2010 that takes place in Baltimore, Maryland, USA.

Date : July 30
Venue : Baltimore Convention Center, Baltimore, Maryland, USA

Here is the interview with Yoshida Brothers by Askew

The Yoshida Brothers are not your typical rock stars. There is no air of pretention, no heavy eyeliner or dyed hair, no “grudge against the world”. In fact, I’m not even sure they are rock stars. Brothers Ryoichiro and Kenichi don’t quite fit the mould but they are headlining this year’s Otakon, following in the leather-booted footsteps of L’Arc~en~Ciel, and Mucc. It’s certainly an unusual choice. Curious? Maybe we should let them take it from here…

“The instrument we play is called “Tsugaru Shamisen”, starts Ryoichiro, “which originated in Aomori, Japan about 120 years ago. [Traditional] Shamisen has been popular in Japanese music for the past 500 years but Tsugaru Shamisen is a rhythmical instrument with a unique performance method, playing a role in both melody as well as percussion.”

Kenichi elaborates, “We are Tsugaru Shamisen performers who create and perform songs with unique and free ideas, updating traditional music for a new generation. We place great value on passing on the tradition to the new generation.”

50 Unheralded Albums from 2009

Great News!

ALARM MAGAZINE chose Yoshida Brothers newest album, PRISM, for 50 Unheralded Album from 2009.

Sludgy alt-metal with free-jazz freakouts. Egyptian, Indian, and Arabic styles in Western structures. Absurdist progressive neoclassical. Playful orchestrations with big-band swing and foreboding soundtrack cues. Blood-curdling horror scores and reflective, introspective rhymes.

ALARM leaves no genre unloved in our round-up of 50 albums that didn’t receive enough attention in 2009.

Prism review by Five For Magazine

Reviewed by Sabrina, Five For Magazine

Perhaps you’ve never heard traditional Japanese instruments, or perhaps you have and found their sound too disparate for Western tastes. Well, step back and try again, my friend, because this is the album for you! Even long-time fans of shamisen music, or even just fans of the Yoshida Kyoudai (or, Yoshida Brothers, as they are known internationally) will be amazed by the breadth of talent on this album. Not only have the Yoshida Brothers once more extended the boundaries of their genre explorations, but they have also assembled a number of skilled guest artists to accompany them on their journey through whooping your ass with sound.

Right from the beginning, “The National Anthem” will rock you out of your seat. Rather than, as expected, being a simple rehash of Japan’s national anthem, this song instead belongs to no other country than the Land Of Awesome. This is definitely the edgiest song they’ve ever made in their 10-year careers (and has been on my top-ten list since its first listen-through).

“Seven” keeps the rock vibe flowing, and mixes influences from bluegrass to rockabilly into its more classic-rock feel. Bjork fans would enjoy the vocal experimentations of “One Long River” (which, ironically, isn’t all that long after all, being the second-shortest song on the album). The smooth, pseudo-Celtic sounds of “Red Bird” give the listener a nice, quiet chance to catch their breath and wonder at the similarities to the Braveheart theme.

Yoshida Brothers Interview by JaME World

Author: Andrea by JaME World
The Yoshida Brothers talk about touring overseas, their new album Prism and their career so far.

We recently got the chance to sit down with the Yoshida Brothers in Los Angeles for an interview in the middle of their American West Coast Tour 09'. Despite it being the day after their San Diego date and before their five-day consecutive San Fransisco shows, the atmosphere was very relaxed and easy-going.

So far you have performed in Los Angeles and San Diego on this tour. How was it so far?

Ryoichiro: It was good! So far we have been touring Japan for ten years and the US for five years so we are used to touring.
Kenichi: It was our first time in San Diego, so it was mostly Japanese people. This is what it was like for our first time in Los Angeles as well. But as we performed there more and more, different types of people start to come, not just Japanese people but lots of Americans, too. Hopefully this is what it will be like for San Diego, too.

How is touring America different from touring Japan?

Ryoichiro: The audience. The timing of the audience and their claps. In Japan, the audience's claps slowly gets louder. In America it is very different and louder.
Kenichi: (Amused) In Europe, it was very silent, it was as if they were watching classical music!

At the end of last year, you did an Oceanic Tour, not many Japanese performers are able to go there. How were those shows compared to the other shows overseas?

Kenichi: That was actually not our first time in Australia! Since our debut we have played the Sydney Opera House once, it was our second time overseas. The audience was much like Europe.

When and why did you first start to incorporate the western style of music into traditional Japanese style?

Kenichi: Since before our debut. It was very hard to only play traditional Japanese style. I wanted to play my own style and show my own style to the world.
Ryoichiro: I feel the same way.

What is the hardest part of playing a shamisen?

Ryoichiro: (laughs) I have been playing the shamisen since I was five. So I have been playing it 25 years and just playing is still hard!
Kenichi: Yes! I feel the same way! Also the mentality of just playing is hard.

Your recently released album is called Prism, what does the title mean to you?

Ryoichiro: This album is a reflection of everything we have been playing up until now. It reflects all of our past albums and everything we have learned so far. And it represents the light.

What is your favorite track to perform from the Prism album?

Ryoichiro: (answers immediately) "Red Bird"
Kenichi: "End of the World"

Live Shots: Yoshida Brothers strum up Yoshi's

Walking confidently on stage and decked out in tradition Japanese garb, the Yoshida Brothers took over the stage at Yoshi's SF in the Fillmore -- they'll be performing there until May 16th. The Yoshida brothers play the shamisen, a square shaped guitar like instrument with only three stings that twangs and resonates long after the stings have been plucked.

Prism review by Sparkplug

Reviewed by Shay, Sparkplug

Prism is a befitting title for the latest album from the masterful shamisen-playing sibling duo Yoshida Brothers. Much like a prism, the brothers bend the white light of traditional folk artistry into a brilliant array of modern-infused music.

The smashing Hokkaido-born duo of Ryoichio and Kenichi Yoshida deliver yet another shining work of folk fusion that the brothers are known for, yet with Prism, they still explore a new direction that sports a personality all it’s own.

The album shows the breadth of its inspiration from start to stop. From “The National Anthem”, a Radiohead cover to the Celtic-style “One Long River” to songwriting collaborations with Phantom Planet vocalist Alex Greenwald, Tori Amos drummer Matt Chamberlain, and many others, the Yoshida Brothers really branch out.

The album lifts off in a suprisingly modern direction with “The National Anthem”. The song, bound by a shamisen melody, comes to life as whiffs of percussion, an electric guitar, and vocals waft in and out.

Prism’s second track, “Seven”, sprints in a more familiar direction. Hipness is still intact but “Seven” isn’t as drenched with modernity as its predecessor. A cool, contemporary groove is still there but the accompanying instrumentation is a generation or two in age closer to the shamisen. It’s certainly a track with a sound that fans of the Yoshida Brothers are well acquainted with.

Prism review by Japanator

Reviewed by Zac Bentz, Japanator

If you ever wondered if there was still a place for traditional folk music in our modern culture, you need look no further than the Yoshida Brothers.

The two young men have been playing the tsugau-shamisen for most of their lives. Over the years, they've released several albums, incorporating their chosen instrument into just about ever genre you can image. If you needed any more proof of their modern flair, they have also provided music for the Nintendo Wii commercials.

The duo's newest album Prism was just released by Domo Music Group, heralding the band's arrival on American soil. Hit the jump for a full run-down of the album.
The album opens with a huge and stomping version of Radiohead's “The National Anthem.” While it's a passable effort, it's a very unusual choice to kick start an album otherwise saturated with virtuoso shamisen performances. For “Anthem,” the Brothers play a two bar loop through the entire song, while the rest of the band provides all of the noise and chaos.

This one odd anomaly out of the way, Prism seems to get off to a more proper pace with "Seven". Another song featuring a full band, it at times seems to channel the spirit of James Brown, before then shifting down into folk and new-age inspired textures, then into blues territory. This is a song that truly showcases the Brothers' breadth of musical understanding, not to mention the ease with which they can slip from one genre into another seamlessly. It's everything that the previous awkward cover isn't, namely solid, intricate and well thought out. It's easy to forget that this is basically an album set up to showcase two shamisen players, since their parts are downplayed greatly.

“One Long River” sits in stark counterpoint, being much more shami-centric, though this time with the wordless female vocals courtesy of Jesca Hoop accompanying it. If Lord of the Rings was set in Japan instead of Britain (via New Zealand), it might have sounded something like “One Long River.” “Red Bird” is, again, one step closer to a more traditional folk tune. It is down-tempo and has a very nostalgic melody that would fit well in a soundtrack for a rosy romance film.

“Mr. Nagano's Foolish Proposal” is another very soundtracky song, written by David Baerwald. It's more atmospheric and almost fantastical in tone, celestial maybe. The heavy use of piano and pizzicato strings lies in stark contrast to the equally staccato shamisen and flute. It's one of the more straight-up new-age tracks on the album.

Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, and Lady Gaga -- what do these three musical artists have to do with Japan's Yoshida Brothers? Absolutely nothing, which is reason enough to catch them when they roll into town next week with their shamisens (a three-stringed instrument not unlike a banjo). The brothers let their strings do all the talking, forsaking words for syncopated rhythms and lightning-fast finger-picking. Considering most songs give us endless couplets with "love" and "thinking of", this can only be seen as a good thing.

If you've seen a commercial for the Nintendo Wii then you've heard the Yoshida Brothers, their ridiculously catchy melodies sending the salary men off in the little car. Five albums in, including a somewhat premature Best Of, and they now command a worldwide audience -- the video for “Rising” has over a million views on YouTube (and the opening notes from the former Hockey Night in Canada theme song). And while they could easily fill an entire show simply plumbing their back catalogue, here's hoping they will lean heavily on their latest album, Prism, which could see them break into the mainstream.

PRISM is chosen This Week's Best Album by Alarm Magazne

Yoshida Brothers new album "PRISM" is released today (5/5/2009),
and it is chosen "This week's best album" by Alarm Magazine!!!

Reviewed by Scott Morrow, Alarm Magazine

Best known in the US for their accompaniment to Nintendo Wii commercials, these shamisen-wielding brothers present an active homage to traditional Japanese music. Much more so than previous releases, Prism is greatly infused with other styles, tapping rock, folk, neoclassical, film scores, and more in collaboration with great guest musicians.

The disc opens with a bouncing rendition of “The National Anthem” by Radiohead, setting an energetic tone for an album that gracefully bobs and weaves. If you’re looking for a great introduction to the brothers’ catalog, pick this up.

The Yoshida Brothers, Japan's young masters of the ancient tsugaru-shamisen, are back with a new album, Prism

The Yoshida Brothers, Japan's young masters of the ancient tsugaru-shamisen, are back with a new album, Prism. The aptly-named release reflects their long-standing commitment to traditional Japanese folk music, refracted through modern musical sensibilities, incorporating elements of pop, rock, and world music sounds.

On Prism, the Yoshida Brothers have collaborated with some notable talents, such as Southern California singer-songwriter Jesca Hoop, who wrote the Celtic-tinged "One Long River" and David Baerwald, the singer-songwriter who provided the whimsical track "Mr. Nagano's Foolish Proposal." And "Summer Day" marks a collaboration with keyboardist and producer Mitchell Froom (writer of the Yoshida Brothers' "Hit Song") with additional songwriting contributions from drummer Matt Chamberlain (Tori Amos, Edie Brickell) and Phantom Planet vocalist Alex Greenwald.

These album stand-outs fit comfortably alongside more traditional examples of Japanese folk like "Hu Jin" and "Aiya," plus the Brothers' inspired cover of "The National Anthem" from Radiohead's Kid A. The album's final track, "End of the World," was featured on the soundtrack to the Mark Wahlberg/Joaquin Phoenix film, We Own the Night, further enhancing the Yoshida Brothers' profile in America.

In their relatively short professional lives, the Yoshida Brothers have had quite an impact on the modern music landscape. The Hokkaido-born brothers Ryoichiro and Kenichi Yoshida have become recognized masters of their signature instrument, the tsugaru-shamisen. Originating in China in the 16th Century, the three-stringed instrument found its way to Japan through traveling folk musicians and became an integral element of Japanese classical music. The Yoshida Brothers have now taken the tsugaru-shamisen further than any other modern musician, practically reinventing its sound, leading to a musical style both firmly rooted in the traditions of the past and boldly looking forward to the future.

In another recording and marriage of modern and traditional sounds, Prism is evidence that the Yoshida Brothers continue to push boundaries in their pursuit of musical exploration, constantly redefining the sound of the shamisen and how it can be fused into new, unique soundscapes.

BIO:
Superstars in their native Japan, young Tsugaru-shamisen virtuosos Ryoichiro and Kenichi Yoshida-The Yoshida Brothers-have effected nothing short of a cultural revolution with a muscular reinvention of the ancient three-stringed instrument, giving it the fiery passion of a rock 'n roll guitar. Online world music portal World Music Central notes, "Clad in formal, ceremonial attire of kimonos and hakama pants, but sporting the dyed light brown hair that is trendy among Japan's savvy youth, the Brothers play the age-old Tsugaru-shamisen-an instrument akin to a rustic three-stringed banjo-with the fervor of Jimi Hendrix."

Song of the Day - Morricone

Today's song is Morricone from Yoshida Brothers' album "III." This song stood out as I listened through the whole album and that was simply because it was different from the others.

The song breaks down to three sections and each has its own unique feel. The brothers, also, play in different style. Instead of showing off their fancy chops, they play modestly, for half of the song, playing the accompaniment.

So this song shows another face of Shamisen: I never thought its edggy sound would blend in with a backband.

Yoshida Brothers- "KODO" Music Video

Here is some Yoshida Brothers' music for you. Shamisen music is usually played in unison, with two or more instruments playing exactly the same melody line simultaneously. But here, Yoshida Brothers break that tradition by incorporating more Western-oriented texture with a lead melody and an accompaniment. Listen carefully and see if you can catch it.

Yoshida Brothers U.S. Tour 2007- “HISHOU”

A shamisen duo from Japan, Yoshida Brothers, will return to the U.S. and perfom in Malibu, Oakland, and New York City this February. Their music is a unique fusion of the old and the new, traditional yet fresh, with a contemporary touch. Their elegant sound thrills you in a way you have never experienced. Don’t miss this chance to see the brothers live!!!
