"Spreading Winter Cheer for Tohoku Children"

January 2012 Field Report
Thanks to the generosity of so many donors around the world, December 2011 and early January 2012 delivered festive holiday cheer and new outdoor learning adventures to many kids living in children's homes across Tohoku...

Christmas Wish Program

During the month of December, Living Dreams worked closely with 7 children's homes located in Miyagi, Iwate and Fukushima prefectures to collect each child's "wished-for" gift choice and arrange for a special party at their home to celebrate the holiday season. Living Dreams ordered 'wished-for' presents for every child, or in some instances, older children requested "otoshidama" (special envelopes with cash) for something they were saving money to buy. Each child's gift was around the ¥5,000 range. Considering that most of these kids rarely receive more than 1 gift a year (typically on birthdays), this was a welcomed event by the home staff and children. Less about the material gift (although truly enjoyed!), each home felt a true sense of appreciation from the community (local and global) with the heartfelt gestures and efforts of so many people wanting to help Tohoku children's homes celebrate the holiday season. 374 children enjoyed a gift of their choice to open, along with a special feast of treats they don't normally get to eat (pizza, fried chicken), along with some traditional Japanese foods and sweets. The occasion gave each home a chance to come together and enjoy the holiday season in uplifting fashion.

English Adventure Snow Camp

During the first week of January 2012, 33 kids from two children's homes in Tohoku enjoyed a 4-day overnight "snow camp" adventure at a beautiful campsite located in the region. From building snowmen, igloos and campfires to skiing and snowshoeing, kids had a chance to play in the snow while working in team units, guided by experienced camp counselors. In just four days, children went from being withdrawn and uncommunicative to more animated and open to new experiences! Despite the very challenging activity of igloo-building several kids stuck with it and were incredibly proud of their accomplishments. Other children simply soaked up the beautiful snowy surroundings as they trekked their way through the woods on a snowshoe hike. And skiing ranked as the favorite activity among most of the kids! To top off their snowy experiences, all of these activities were sprinkled with a few English lessons as well...

[Project Summary]
Our project will provide immediate and long-term support to orphanages in Tohoku and other areas that were affected by the devastating earthquake and tsunami. This support includes delivering basic necessities and services to help children regain a sense of stability in their lives. We'll provide material support such as clothing, footwear, toys, books, school supplies, and bikes. For emotional support, this includes counseling and therapeutic activities (field trips,Yoga, camps,etc...)

[What is the issue, problem, or challenge?]
There are approximately 100,000 displaced children (according to Save the Children estimates) as a result of the devastating earthquake and tsunami that took place on March 11, 2011. Although there are relief organizations in the Tohoku region currently providing food, shelter and crisis counselling support, many orphans will need longer-term support to help restore their lives and renew their spirit. Many orphanages (in and around) northeastern Japan will now have new orphans under their care.

[How will this project solve this problem?]
Tohoku Kids' Support Project will directly address two-tiers of support at those affected orphanages. By working closely with orphanage staff, local prefecture wards, and children's homes associations, we will address the specific needs at each orphanage. Tier one support will replace those personal items that were lost in the disaster such as clothing, footwear, school supplies, books, toys, phones,bikes, etc. Tier two support will address child counselling needs and therapeutic activities.

"I've always considered myself sort of a painter - of sound. For a while now, I've been experimenting with many different new sound textures, and this recording is the result. The more I worked on the pieces, the more I was aware that the music was heavily influenced by my recent trip to Japan. My choice of sonic tonal colors seemed to reflect my many experiences there, from riding the shinkansen, to the lush countryside, the temples, the cities in the rain, and even walking through Tokyo at early dawn in a wide-awake trance, due to jet lag. It all seems sort of surreal now, and I think my 'paintings' allow me to travel back to that special in my memory. And it makes me look forward to when I can visit again."

Here is the update from one of the project we support.

ShelterBox were highly praised for their response by Japanese families and authorities

Six months ago on March 11 at 05:46 local time Japan was struck by a 9 magnitude earthquake with the epicentre 120km off its north-eastern coast. The earthquake generated a tsunami devastating coastal communities with the most severe damage in three districts: Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima.

ShelterBox were one of the first aid agencies to respond and were able to operate within the country due to their ability to work self-sufficiently. Within 24 hours of the disaster happening the first ShelterBox Response Team (SRT) was on the ground where they worked with the authorities to assess the areas of most need. Since then 1,680 boxes have been deployed to the area.

The speed, adeptness of the response and extent of aid delivered reserved special praise from the Japanese authorities that expressed their ‘deepest respect’ for ShelterBox’s work. The British Embassy in Tokyo has since sought specialist advice from ShelterBox regarding the most effective methods to operate in such an emergency.

During a recent visit made by ShelterBox, the mayor of Yamamoto-Cho, said that the tents provided by ShelterBox were made even more crucial by the lack of provisions from the Japanese government and other tent manufacturers whose resources had been strained due to the disaster.

John Leach, Head of Operations at ShelterBox, was present at the visit and said: ‘The Japanese were especially grateful for the tents as even in evacuation centres they were using them as private spaces and sleeping areas for families. This is incredibly important for morale and has given families a sense of dignity in the aftermath of disaster.

‘A handful of families were still living in ShelterBox tents as temporary accommodation was being built. But the presence of ShelterBox tents within the past six months has no doubt played a massive role in supporting these families while the country recovers.’

7 months have passed since the 9.1 magnitude earthquake and resulting tsunami hit Japan, yet they are still struggling to recover from the disaster.

Tsunami waves caused major destruction in northern Japan. The death toll has now officially crossed 10,000 & more than 17,000 are missing Nearly 300,000 are in temporary shelter. We are working primarily with local Japanese organizations on the ground to provide support. These are listed on the "Reports" tab of this Fund. We will post more details of the specific use of funds as we receive them.

This project will disburse funds to organizations providing relief and emergency services to victims of the earthquake and tsunami.

During July 4th weekend, our staff visited Manzanar War Relocation Center which was one of ten camps where Japanese American citizens and resident Japanese aliens were interned during World War II. It is located at the foot of the Sierra Nevada in California's Owens Valley between the towns of Lone Pine to the south and Independence to the north, it is approximately 230 miles (370 km) northeast of Los Angeles.
We were impressed by how well the place was preserved and maintained, and also surprised by how many people were visiting. There is a museum where you can learn the history and people's lives there. You can also talk to volunteers who had experienced this tragedy. We found a display of Toyo Miyatake's camera which was the main theme of the documentary film "Toyo's Camera".

Admission is free for all visitors. If you have a chance to visit this area, please drop by at Manzanar.
