Here is the interview with Dave Eggar by Christian Lamitschka
Ch.L.: Country Music has many new fans in Europe, who may be hearing about you for the first time. How would you describe yourself and the music you play to someone who has never seen or heard you before.
Dave Eggar: I consider my music to be a form of Extreme Crossover. A powerful and expressive collision of Classical music, Folk Music , blue-grass, and rock. My voice is the cello and I see my playing as a fusion of Jasha Heifitz, Jimi Hendrix, Chubby Wise, and John Coltrane.
In my early career I trained at the Juilliard school and toured as solo cello virtuoso, but I was obssessed with Appalachian Music, Grunge Rock, and Jazz. One of my first classical music teachers was the famous composer Aaron Copland. He instilled in me a love of Bluegrass and American Folk Music. Shortly after I left Lincoln Center I found myself playing with artists such as the Who, Michael Brecker, Evanescence Josh Groban, Coldplay and many contemporary rock and jazz and bluegrass projects. These incredible artists help to shape and develop my style. My Band, Deoro, is a high energy power trio featuring Drummer Chuck Palmer and Bassist Tom Pirozzi.
Ch.L.: How was the last year for you? What were the highlights?
Dave Eggar: We have had a truly incredible year. My Band Deoro and I just returned from two months of touring in Southeast Asia. In addition to the incredibly warm audiences and exciting high energy shows, We had the unique opportunity to travel to the Bukidnon region of Mindanao*(the southernmost island of the Philippines) to collaborate with the Talaandig tribe and string instrument virtuoso Wawai Sawai, learning their 2000 year old "fiddling" traditions and recording with them. Our travels have also taken us to Kingston Jamaica 4 times this year to record and create at Tuff Gong Studios and to work with the For Jamaica charity writing with and supporting orphans in the hills of the island; and to Appalachia to work with the legendary Dr. Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys. We also added James Luk and his team of Karate world champions to our shows at Lincoln Center and in Asia--to create a more theatrical Deoro show! Touring has been so much fun. It has also been incredible to bring to cello to parts of the world that have never heard it and to experience an audience hearing my instrument for the first time!

Deoro is composed of Dave Eggar, Chuck Palmer and Tom Pirozzi
As I entered Izakaya and heard techno music filling the entire Bar, I turned to the man at the door and asked, “The Brooklyn-Manila Project” is tonight, right? He grunted and pointed to the poster. I opened my notes and checked again: “classical
. . . cello.”
It was a young crowd, and everybody was in high spirits, not the kind of audience you’d expect waiting for a classical jazz performance. “This is going to be a real interesting gig,” I said to my date, “Even if he’s as good as everybody says he is, I don’t think this is, his kind of audience.”
I was wrong.
There was no grand entrance or introduction when Dave Eggar and his band Deoro (composed of Chuck Palmer and Tom Pirozzi) climbed the stage but their presence and Eggar’s towering cello was enough to make a lot of heads turn in eager anticipation of what was going to happen next.
And as soon as the first note from his cello was unleashed, it immediately effortlessly blended with the techno music on the background as if it was part of it. He had fused in and made everyone groove to a strange new beat.
Such is the incredible talent of Dave Eggar. His ability to effortlessly move from pop, rock, jazz, R&B, New Age, world or classical music is aptly matched by the diversity of musical artists that he had worked with that includes Evanescence (tours and album), Bon Jovi, Josh Groban, Coldplay (“Viva La Vida”,) Beyonce (“If I were a Boy”,) Fergie (“Big Girls Don’t Cry”,) Pearl Jam, Fall Out Boy (album) and Duncan Sheik truly illustrates that.
He had been performing since he was seven, and speaks of his music like a nuclear physicist describing it as fission rather than merely a fusion of musical genres, “Fusion is just another genre, unlike fission wherein you first have to break down music into parts and carefully picking out the elements you could put together to create something really unique,” Eggar explains, continuing, “As a classical artist, I’ve landed in a genre called classical crossover and I always hated that term because it seemed like we are just reaching over. What we are doing is ‘extreme classical crossover’ much like extreme skiing or extreme skateboarding. We are looking for high-risk collaborations where you are unsure if it’s going to work or how it is going to pan out.”
His latest work Kingston Morning is an album of collaborations done in Kingston, Jamaica, Big Stone Gap, Virginia, and Brooklyn, NY and perfectly mirrors Dave’s mission to “not just cross over, but to cross through” genres. He said it represents a new and extreme brand of high-risk, high-impact classical crossover and juxtaposes Reggae and Appalachian music in a look at local culture fighting for a voice in an increasingly global environment.
It is this continuing quest for high-risk collaborations that brought him back to the country.
In addition to his celebrated work in the classical and new classical worlds, Dave's mastery of contemporary improvisational styles has earned him numerous nationwide competitions, solo spots with marquee artists and critical acclaim for film scores. On his debut release, he named this beautiful collection of neo-classical piano pieces, Serenity. With this critically acclaimed work, Dave takes you on an inner journey of intense beauty, breathtaking brillance, and impeccable craftsmanship in the most intimate of settings.

The term musical genius is thrown around a bit easily. But in the unusual case of Dave Eggar, it actually applies.
He was a child immersed in sound who has become a man bent on breaking barriers.
Eggar read music before words. His mother was a classical pianist. Among his earliest memories is falling asleep listening to her play sonatas. He began playing piano at the age of three. His first teacher was legendary composer Aaron Copland.
“For me, music has always been my primary grammar,” Eggar said. “From the first second I heard music, there was always tremendous freedom in the song.”
His mother wanted him to be a violinist and enrolled him in Suzuki classes. But it didn’t feel right.
“You’d walk around with a violin, and it was so painful and unpleasant after three classes I smashed my violin on the floor,” he said.
The violin felt unnatural because Eggar was born to play cello. He began playing the instrument at the age of six.
“I took to it very quickly,” he recalled. “In about six months, I was playing Brahms E minor Sonata, somehow, and I started to become the principal in all the little kids’ orchestras. And from the get-go it was something I felt as a voice.”
At the age of seven, he earned a spot in the Metropolitan Opera’s child chorus. He enjoyed an intensive five year career as a boy soprano, becoming a featured soloist. He was subsequently recognized as a teenage prodigy on cello. He debuted in Carnegie Hall at the age of 15 as the youngest winner in the history of the prestigious Arts International competition.
Columbia Artists signed him and he became well known as a classical soloist over the next three years. But as much as he loved the music, he felt stifled as a classical performer. He sought even greater freedom.
“I found that world very difficult and struggled emotionally within it, a lot because of my need to say something,” Eggar said. “I felt like classical music was a tremendous education for me, but there was always a need for me to really reach people and communicate something very personal. I felt the limitations of being a normal classical soloist were not really going to do that for me.”
His rebellion was to enter Harvard on a music scholarship and study biochemistry. While there, however, he also studied under renowned cellist Yo Yo Ma.
“You know, I wasn’t the best cello student,” Eggar said. “I mean, let’s face it, I studied with some of the great virtuosos of the last century, and they all hated me. For a couple reasons – one is I was constantly wanting to do my own thing, and two, I was really good at tricks. Like I didn’t have the best technique, but when it came to those really hard virtuoso things that no one could do, I can do them and I can do them faster than most of my teachers, which in the classical world is a big deal.”
Yo Yo Ma saw beyond the bluster and into the artistry of a young musician who simply sought greater self-expression.
“First of all, the guy is a genius,” Eggar said. “Second of all, he really heard me – he really heard what I was trying to do, and he always had such intuitive things to say to me.”
After Harvard, Eggar returned himself wholly to music. He entered the doctoral program at Julliard and began to forge his own voice on cello. Afterwards, he co-founded the critically acclaimed Flux Quartet and became a much-coveted touring musician. His first tour out of graduate school was with The Who. Eventually he would play with many different artists, including Kathleen Battle, Coldplay, Wynton Marsalis, Ornette Coleman, and the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Most recently, he has toured extensively with Evanescence and formed a close musical alliance with lead singer Amy Lee. Most locally, he became a compatriot and guiding light to Hermosa-born and budding Brooklyn star Katie Costello.
“It has been a complicated road,” Eggar said. “I’ve played with many, many artists, but to me it always has been a journey…it’s funny, it is almost like trying to find my way back to something that was so pure and beautiful when I first found music,” Eggar said.
A journey indeed. Eggar, perhaps as much as anyone since his mentor, Yo Yo Ma, has taken the cello to unfamiliar places. He has played in rock stadiums and karate choreographies. And with his newest album, Kingston Morning, he has begun a series of tonal, geographical, and cultural explorations that manages in one fell swoop to create a new musical genre – classical reggae – and delve into the likewise deeply spiritual tradition of American bluegrass.
Eggar, who plays Saint Rocke on Sunday night, said the concept began as a single album in which he hoped to play in Jamaica, Iran, and Appalachia. But after beginning in Jamaica – at the revered Tuff Gong Studios, no less – and emerging with eight different tracks on collaborations with seven different artists and then journeying to Appalachia and recording seven more tracks with Dr. Ralph Stanley, Eggar realized he had a series on his hands. He and Charlie Palmer – the co-producer of his record and “my favorite drummer in the world,” Eggar says – will arrive in Hermosa fresh from the Philippines, where they traveled into the hinterlands and played with tribal musicians never before recorded.
